Setting the stage for future generations.

Letter from the Secretary-General:

Dear Delegates, Advisors, and Parents,
It is my utmost pleasure to welcome you all to the twentieth session of São Paulo Model United Nations. As the second largest conference in Latin America, SPMUN will host over three-hundred delegates from all over Brazil and South America. Over the next three days brace yourselves for uniquely crafted committee sessions with fast-paced and intense debate, a select group of inspiring chairs eager to do everything they can to ensure the conference's success and the opportunity to meet countless individuals from all across the globe who will not only be your friends throughout your MUN experiences, but also outside of it.

For the twentieth session of SPMUN, the secretariat has decided on the theme of "The Conflicts of Generation Z". The Huffington Post defines Generation Z as being made up of anyone "born in 1995 or later", which applies to virtually every participant of the conference. We are the first generation to have the technological resources to replace humans with artificial intelligence, to explore and potentially even populate the cosmos, and have the access to the largest amount of information in history. However, we are also the first generation to live in a world where weapons are powerful enough to ensure mutually assured destruction and where the enhanced greenhouse effect threatens to dramatically modify the Earth's climate. Known as the generation who will "fix the problems left by millenials", we're critical thinkers and idealists, but we're also narcissists. With this, it's imperative that we put those things into question and use our abilities to tackle the contemporary issues that affect us now and may continue to do so as we run the course of our lives.

I strongly encourage all of you to keep that in mind as you challenge yourself to solve these global issues, but above all, to think. Instead of looking exactly at what your country agreed to in 1945 regarding the end of WWII, use what you've learned from your research to come up with an alternative. What could've been done better? Instead of adding in the same suggestions you did to the last terrorism resolution you wrote, think about what makes this particular case different. We're early starters, entrepreneurs and multi-taskers with the highest expectations any generation has ever seen. Let's make it count. Let's truly think together and "fix the mess."

It's my sincere hope that this edition of SPMUN at least ignites a spark that encourages all of you to do so. To remember that, even though a certain issue may not directly affect us, our actions may directly affect it.

My Chief Operations Officer, Gianluca Salles and I could not be more excited about SPMUN. We hope to see you prepared, intrigued and eager to debate and meet new people. We look forward to meeting you all in September.

Yours sincerely,
Gabriela Rocha Campos
Secretary-General, SPMUN XX.
